Cat Adoption in Costa Rica
Meet vetted, vaccinated, lovingly socialized cats ready to be adopted — locally in Costa Rica or to approved homes abroad.
Adopting a cat in Costa Rica isn''t just about bringing a pet home — it''s about changing a life. Purr Vida Lounge is a registered rescue based in Brasilito, Guanacaste. Every cat that joins our lounge has been rescued, examined by our veterinary team, vaccinated, sterilized, and given the time to decompress and learn what a calm, loving environment feels like.
When you adopt from us, you''re not getting a kitten from a pet store — you''re welcoming a fully vetted companion whose entire backstory we can share, supported by a rescue team that''s here for questions long after you take them home. We adopt to residents of Costa Rica and, in many cases, to approved homes abroad with proper travel arrangements.
How Purr Vida Lounge Rescue Works
Founded by Miss Meow, our rescue grew out of years of personal cat-rescue work across Guanacaste. Today we maintain a small in-lounge population of socialized cats plus a network of foster homes for kittens, mothers with litters, and cats recovering from surgery or illness. Every cat is medically cleared before adoption: full vet exam, vaccinations, deworming, sterilization (age permitting), and FeLV/FIV testing where applicable. Our lounge doubles as a meet-and-greet space — visitors can spend real time with cats before deciding.
How to Adopt a Cat from Us
The adoption process is straightforward. First, browse our Adoptable Cats page or visit the lounge in person to meet our residents. When you find a cat you''re drawn to, fill out our adoption inquiry form — we''ll ask about your home, other pets, lifestyle, and travel plans. We''ll set up a longer meet-and-greet, talk through the cat''s history and needs, and walk you through the adoption fee (which helps cover the next rescue). Most adoptions are finalized within 1–2 weeks. For international adoptions, we''ll coordinate vet certificates and travel documentation.
Every Adoption Includes
Full medical history. Up-to-date vaccinations. Sterilization. Deworming and parasite prevention. Microchip where available. A starter pack of food and basic supplies. And lifetime advice — call us anytime your cat does something weird and we''ll help you figure it out. We genuinely want every adoption to succeed, so we''re here long after you walk out the door.
The Reality of Cats in Costa Rica
Costa Rica has a serious stray cat population, especially in beach towns where seasonal residents abandon pets at the end of the season. Sterilization access is limited, kittens are born outdoors year-round, and many don''t survive their first months. Every cat we rescue is one less litter on the street next year. Adopting locally — instead of importing a kitten or buying from a breeder — is one of the most meaningful things you can do for animal welfare in this country.
Happy Tails
Hundreds of cats have left our lounge for forever homes — local Tica families, expat retirees in Tamarindo and Flamingo, tourists who fell in love and arranged international adoption, and digital nomads who turned their Costa Rica stay into a permanent family. Read some of our favorite happy-ending stories on the site, and follow our Instagram for adoption updates and ''gotcha day'' photos.
