Basic Cat Health Guide
Vaccines, parasite prevention, and the everyday signs that tell you when something is off.
Routine care
Vaccines
- Kittens: start at 8 weeks, boosters every 3–4 weeks until 16 weeks
- Core vaccines: FVRCP (panleukopenia, herpes, calicivirus) and rabies
- Annual checkup is the foundation of preventive care
Parasite prevention
- Monthly flea and tick prevention year-round in Costa Rica's climate
- Deworming as recommended by your vet
Daily signs to monitor
- Eating and drinking normally
- Using the litter box (frequency, consistency)
- Energy and play
- Coat quality
Call the vet if you see
- Not eating for >24 hours
- Vomiting more than once or twice
- Lethargy, hiding more than usual
- Straining in the litter box (URGENT for male cats)
- Bad breath, weight loss, or limping
