My New Cat Is Hiding

Hiding is healthy behavior

A new cat hiding for 1–2 weeks (sometimes longer for shy cats) is completely normal. They're processing a brand new world.

Do

• Leave food, water, and a litter box very close to the hiding spot
• Sit nearby and talk softly so they learn your voice
• Use a Feliway diffuser to ease stress
• Give it time — patience is the most important ingredient

Don't

• Pull them out from their hiding spot
• Bring strangers in to meet them
• Move their safe room around
• Worry if they only come out at night — that's normal

When to call the vet

If your cat is not eating or drinking for more than 24 hours, or shows signs of illness (vomiting, lethargy beyond shy behavior), reach out to your vet.
